Connected financial data · ChatGPT Finances privacy and accuracy guide
ChatGPT Finances reaches Free and Go users with connected-account controls
The rollout brings spending, bills, subscriptions, net worth, and investment questions to more U.S. users. It can organize and explain connected data, but incomplete feeds, categorization errors, privacy choices, and the limits of AI-generated financial guidance still need human review.
OpenAI's October 2 release note says Finances in ChatGPT is rolling out to Free and Go users in the United States on web, iOS, and Android, expanding beyond Plus and Pro. Users can connect selected accounts through Plaid and ask questions grounded in balances and transactions. The tool cannot move money or make trades, and its answers remain informational rather than professional financial, tax, legal, or investment advice.

What changed on October 2
OpenAI's dated release note says Finances is rolling out to Free and Go users in the United States on web, iOS, and Android. The feature had already been documented for Plus and Pro. Rollouts are gradual, so an eligible account may not show it immediately.
The detailed Finances help page still described Plus and Pro availability when Learnetto checked it. Treat the dated release note as the source for the expansion and the help page as the operating guide, while expecting its eligibility text to catch up with the rollout.
What a connected account enables
Finances can combine balances, transactions, recurring charges, bills, net worth, and investment information supplied through supported Plaid connections. Users can inspect dashboard widgets or ask questions about spending categories, subscriptions, upcoming payments, budgets, debt plans, and portfolio allocation.
This is an analysis and planning surface. OpenAI says ChatGPT cannot move money, pay bills, change account settings, make trades, alter retirement contributions, open or close accounts, or file taxes. That boundary reduces execution risk, but an inaccurate explanation can still influence a consequential decision.
Check the source data before acting
Connected institutions may provide limited history or omit transaction, holding, loan, rate, and due-date fields. Transfers, reimbursements, credit-card payments, or duplicate pending transactions can also distort spending categories. Ask which records support an answer, check the last sync time, and compare important totals with the financial institution itself.
OpenAI states that ChatGPT is not a fiduciary, registered investment adviser, broker-dealer, tax preparer, or law firm. Its responses are for informational and planning purposes only. Use a qualified professional for decisions with legal, tax, or investment consequences.
Review privacy and retention before connecting
Choose only the accounts and data you are comfortable sharing. Existing ChatGPT model-training settings apply to Finances, and connected information can be combined with financial memories such as goals or obligations. Temporary chats do not access connected financial accounts and do not create or use memories.
Disconnecting removes synced account data from OpenAI's systems within 30 days, according to the help page, but it does not remove financial details already present in conversation history. Delete those conversations separately, review financial memories, and use the Accounts tab to remove individual connections or resolve sync issues.
Run a cautious first review
- Read the current eligibility, data-control, memory, and deletion sections before opening Plaid.
- Connect one low-complexity account first and note which data categories you authorize.
- Wait for sync to finish, then compare the balance and several recent transactions with the institution's own records.
- Ask for a spending summary and request the specific transactions used for each category.
- Correct transfers, reimbursements, duplicates, or classifications before using a trend or budget result.
- Do not use one generated answer as the basis for a trade, tax filing, credit decision, or other consequential action.
